Erin Murphy utilizes her craft as an illustrator and strategic methodologies as a designer to partner with those trying to make the future a little more tangible.

Erin founded By Tomo in 2021, a micro product design studio focused on partnering with specialized, highly technical companies and domains. Clients include Pearson, Buck, Google, Yale Peabody Museum, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, Planet, and a collection of small stealth startups.

Erin got her start as a designer with NASA’s JPL Mars 2020 mission where she partnered with scientists and roboticists building software for commanding the future rover, orchestrated large scale simulations, and designed dashboards to help monitor telemetry readings from spacecraft. Erin also helped Earth scientists gain access to the latest CO-2 data

After spending much of her early career in aerospace, Erin looked to media for a new challenge partnering with HBO. There, she collaborated across several vectors of the HBO product team to ship essential features for viewers on the go. Erin’s work with HBO resulted in enhanced information architecture experiences for the HBO catalog.

Drawn to the collaboration and exposure to new domains, Erin began her design consultant chapter working with Carbon Five. At Carbon Five, she helped clients across a broad set of verticals stand up beta products, visualize product identities, and…also space.

When not working, Erin focuses on community building. She enjoys workshops, collaborating with other creatives, creating gifs, and illustrating for her quarterly journal.
